Shun Fook Barn is a contemporary retail remodeling project that pays homage to the historical and agricultural roots of Yuen Long, Hong Kong. Drawing on the vernacular architectural language of the gable roofs, the project reinterprets the scale and material expression of the farmhouse to create an architecture and retail spaces that have identity, human-scaled, community-focused, and fluid in interior and exterior relationship. 

The façade is composed of a series of pitched roof architecture features with integrated green wall design to create and special place in the neighborhood while relating the project to the history of the Yuen Long farmland. The west façade of Shun Fook Barn faces a modest canal that runs upstream of Shan Pui River. In response to the natural surroundings and to encourage greater indoor-outdoor relationships, retail shopfronts are intentionally setback to create semi-covered areas – allowing opportunities for alfresco seating and street-side retail.

The interior spaces of Shun Fook Barn are rational with a clear directionality. Indoor event spaces have been intentionally carved out from the retail floor to allow programmed or informal gatherings, fulfilling the social function of malls in Hong Kong’s unpredictable subtropical climate while creating pathways that link different streets to create shortcuts and promote pedestrian flow.

The interior make use of green walls, a neutral, earthy color palette for the interior. An iconic sculpture that echos a tree sits in the center of the mall for placing making and to create identity.
